Beyond The Known

Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. 2022

The Waterpocket Fold in Capitol Reef National Park is illuminated in twilight or blue hour light. This lighting is extremely soft yet angled, which makes the photographs great for being in the canyon country. Instead of having harsh shadows and highlights from the sunset, this light gives soft shadows and subtle highlights. This image showcases the Henry Mountains, the Waterpocket Fold of Capitol Reef National Park and the Strike Valley. This area is very under the radar still so you can find real solitude and images that have never been photographed before. Photographing Capitol Reef is unlike photographing any other of the Utah's Mighty Five. This was created on the third night of a 45-mile backpacking trip deep in the wilderness south of Capitol Reef National Park. This next morning, unknown to us, a huge snow-storm would come in, producing inches of snow in just a few hours. This made exiting this area, the 14 miles back to the vehicle extremely difficult and quite dangerous.
