Last year’s participant review

“I have been on four or five workshops with Hunter and I am NEVER disappointed. I always come out with spectacular photos and very memorable adventures. The images I get on each workshop exceed my wildest expectations. Hunter's explanations of his techniques for compositions & editing gave me confidence to do these things myself. If you want to walk away with exceptional images and compositions, have an adventure, and have fun, then partake in his workshops.”

Move through a landscape shaped by sea, mountains, and Arctic light.

This workshop moves through beaches, fishing villages, waterfalls, mountain lakes, and trailheads beneath peaks that rise more than 2,000 feet from the water. It will not be a stationary trip. We will hike often, follow the weather, and move when the light gives us a better option. Most days will likely include a short hike or walk of about 1.5 miles round trip, and two days may include hikes around 3 miles round trip. It will take energy and flexibility, but this is the kind of landscape that can make the effort completely worth it.

Lofoten Workshop Highlights

  • Mountain Scale: Lofoten has sharp peaks, green valleys, sea cliffs, and mountain walls rising straight from the water. Weather and light change the compositions quickly.
  • Remote Beaches: We will photograph beaches where mountains, surf, sand, and sky stack into one frame. Many of these locations work well for both wide scenes and smaller foreground studies.
  • Guided Locations: Locations are chosen for photographic potential, not just name recognition. We will prioritize places where the group can slow down and work carefully.
  • Scouted Hikes: Hikes and field routes are scouted in advance. They may take us to waterfalls, viewpoints, beaches, lakes, and quieter mountain terrain.
  • Covered Logistics: Workshop transportation and private-room lodging are included. You handle flights, meals, personal gear, insurance, and pre-workshop lodging.
  • Summer Weather: Expect rain, sun, fog, wind, and fast changes. We will choose locations based on the conditions each day.
  • Summer Hours: The best light may last for hours. Many field sessions will happen late at night, often between sunset color and early sunrise light.

Learning points

Build photographs around scale, weather, and atmosphere.

We work through each location carefully, identifying the true subject and simplifying complex relationships between peaks, water, villages, and sky.

Instruction connects composition with exposure, lens choice, visual flow, changing weather, and a deliberate field workflow.

  • Compose grand mountain, coastal, and village landscapes
  • Use wide-angle and telephoto lenses to communicate scale
  • Read long Arctic light, cloud breaks, fog, and changing weather
  • Photograph waterfalls, rivers, and ocean movement with intention
  • Simplify complex relationships between peaks, water, villages, and sky
  • Refine exposure, focus, filtration, and tripod technique
  • Protect camera equipment and work confidently in wet, windy conditions
  • Strengthen photographs through image review and editing guidance

Overview

An immersive journey through the Arctic landscape.

This workshop includes six full days and six nights of lodging in the Lofoten Islands. Private-room lodging, transportation from the group pickup in Leknes, workshop ground transportation, ferry fares, and planned admission fees are included.

Our route can include Moskenesøya, Flakstadøya, and Vestvågøya, with field sessions around fishing villages, beaches, fjords, waterfalls, coastal roads, and mountain trails. The exact route is decided from weather, tides, visibility, trail conditions, and the strongest available light.

I chose these dates for a better chance of sunlight, slightly drier conditions, and extended sunset color. Rain, wind, mist, low clouds, and several consecutive wet days are still possible. Everyone must arrive prepared to photograph in those conditions.

The strongest light will often occur late at night. Field sessions are expected to run roughly from 10:30pm to 3:30am, with rest, meals, travel, backups, image review, and editing handled around that schedule.

Workshop at a glance

Create with more time, attention, and guidance.

Hike among granite peaks, cascading waterfalls, remote beaches, green hills, and ferry-linked villages beneath golden Arctic light that can linger for hours.

What to expect

The rhythm of the workshop.

Northern Norway asks us to work differently than a typical sunrise-and-sunset trip. The schedule, lodging, hiking, and meals are built around making the most of that rare Arctic light.

+

Weather

Chosen for light, planned around rain.

These dates give us a better chance for sun, less persistent rain, and long Arctic light. Weather is still unpredictable.

Expect rain. It may rain briefly each day, or it may rain for long stretches. Come prepared for both.

Bring a dependable rain jacket, rain pants, waterproof footwear, gaiters, and camera protection.

Weather will decide the daily plan. We will move when conditions improve and use protected locations when needed.

Arctic light schedule

Sunset color without true darkness.

The sun sets, but it does not get fully dark. Color can last for one to three hours.

Our strongest field hours will usually be between 10:30pm and 3:30am.

Exact timing will change during the week as sunset and sunrise shift. We will adjust the schedule around the best light.

Hiking

Short hikes into the landscapes that make Norway unforgettable.

Plan on about five hikes or longer walks during the workshop. The longest planned hike is about 3.5 miles round trip with roughly 500 feet of elevation gain.

This is not a road-only workshop. Expect beaches, uneven rock, wet ground, muddy trails, and some moderate uphill sections while carrying camera gear.

Bring waterproof hiking boots, lighter hiking shoes, and gaiters. Routes will be adjusted for weather, trail conditions, safety, and group ability.

Lodging

A comfortable base in the heart of the Lofoten Islands.

Six nights of lodging are included: the nights of July 25 through July 30, with checkout on July 31. The Airbnb is about 1.5 hours from Leknes.

Each participant gets a private bedroom. The house has two kitchens and three shared bathrooms. The hotel night before the workshop is not included.

Meals

Simple, flexible meals shaped by the group.

Meals, groceries, coffee, and beverages are not included. The Airbnb has two kitchens for cooking.

We will stop for groceries and eat at restaurants when the field schedule allows. Meal timing will stay flexible. Share dietary restrictions before the workshop.

Airports & pick-up

Fly into Leknes and arrive one day early.

Fly into Leknes, Norway, and arrive no later than July 24. Book a hotel in or near Leknes for that night.

Group pickup is the morning of July 25 from an agreed Leknes hotel. This is not an individual airport pickup. The hotel and time will be confirmed before the workshop.

The drive to the Airbnb is about 1.5 hours. On July 31, group transportation returns to Leknes. Drop-off timing will be based on the group’s confirmed travel plans.

Where we photograph

Three islands, selected around the strongest conditions.

Our working area spans Moskenesøya, Flakstadøya, and Vestvågøya. These islands contain Lofoten’s strongest combinations of mountain peaks, beaches, fishing villages, fjords, waterfalls, scenic roads, harbors, and trail access.

+

The list below defines the areas we may use, not a fixed sightseeing schedule. Each day’s route is chosen from weather, tides, wind, visibility, access, and the direction of the best available light.

  1. 01

    Reine, Hamnøy & Sakrisøy

Moskenesøya · Villages, fjords, bridges, and mountain scale

Reine, Hamnøy, and Sakrisøy give us strong village-and-mountain compositions in a compact area. Subjects include red and yellow rorbuer, working harbors, bridges, channels, docks, reflections, and steep peaks.

These places are popular, so we will work beyond the standard overlook. We will use telephoto lenses for cabin-and-mountain compression, isolate smaller building groups, and separate layers of water, village, and rock. Wider frames may use shoreline, reflections, low clouds, rain, and moving light.

    • Telephoto village and mountain layers
    • Harbor reflections and bridges
    • Cabins, docks, and working-waterfront details
  2. 02

    Å, Sørvågen & Moskenes

Western Moskenesøya · Harbors, lakes, trailheads, and village details

Å is a traditional fishing village at the western end of the road. Subjects include weathered buildings, fish-drying racks, docks, narrow lanes, sheltered water, boats, rope, wood textures, and mountains around the harbor.

Sørvågen and Moskenes add lakes, streams, trailheads, ferry activity, channels, and sea views. This area lets us shift quickly from village work to waterfalls, mountain lakes, or short hikes. If clouds hide the peaks, we can work close to water and buildings. If visibility improves, we can move toward bigger views.

    • Traditional fishing structures and harbor details
    • Mountain lakes, streams, and waterfalls
    • Trail access and wider coastal views
  3. 03

    Skagsanden & Flakstadpollen

Flakstadøya · Tides, sand patterns, fjords, and reflected mountains

Skagsanden changes with tide and runoff. We will look for dark sand channels, reflective areas, seaweed lines, flowing water, and foregrounds that lead toward the surrounding mountains.

Flakstadpollen is a more protected fjord nearby. Calm water can reflect mountains and low clouds. Roads, small settlements, marshes, and shoreline give us quieter telephoto options. If wind makes the beach difficult, the fjord may be a better choice.

    • Tidal channels and reflective sand
    • Long exposures and moving water
    • Fjord reflections and layered mountain studies
  4. 04

    Ramberg, Fredvang & Vareid

Northern Flakstadøya · Open beaches, bridges, rocky coast, and trail access

Ramberg and Fredvang include broad beaches, turquoise water, bridges, farms, and steep mountain walls. The open landscape is useful for scale and cleaner compositions than the denser villages. Fredvang also gives access to trails with elevated coastal views.

Vareid is rougher coast: waves, rounded rocks, tidal water, open sea, and mountain backdrops. Wind direction and cloud movement will decide where we work. Calm weather may favor reflections and beach structure. Stronger weather may favor surf, dark rock, mist, and mountains in rain.

    • Open beach and mountain-scale compositions
    • Bridges, roads, farms, and settled landscapes
    • Waves, rocks, mist, and exposed coastal weather
  5. 05

    Haukland & Uttakleiv

Vestvågøya · White sand, tidal pools, boulders, and elevated views

Haukland has pale sand, clear water, and steep green mountains directly behind the beach. It works well for simple foreground-to-peak compositions, reflected light, breaking waves, and contrast between bright water and dark mountain faces.

Uttakleiv is more rugged, with boulders, tidal pools, rock shelves, open ocean, and late-night sky views. We can work with slow shutter speeds, reflected color, intimate rock-and-water scenes, or wider coastal compositions. If weather and trails allow, nearby elevated routes show both sides of the coast.

    • White-sand beach and mountain relationships
    • Tidal pools, boulders, and reflected color
    • Elevated coastal views when conditions permit
  6. 06

    Nusfjord & Smaller Villages

Protected harbors · Historic structures, cabins, and quieter details

Nusfjord sits in a narrow, protected harbor below steep rock walls. Subjects include wooden buildings, fishing cabins, docks, boats, working details, enclosed water, reflections, textures, and the village-to-mountain relationship.

Smaller settlements give similar subjects with fewer fixed viewpoints. These areas are useful during wind, rain, or low visibility because protected harbors can be stronger than exposed coastlines. Planned admission fees are included when entry is required.

    • Environmental village landscapes
    • Architecture, boats, textures, and repeated forms
    • Protected-water options during rough coastal weather

Recommended gear list

Camera gear and personal gear.

Everyone needs serious waterproof gear: a dependable waterproof jacket, rain pants, waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, and a second pair of lighter shoes. Temperatures are usually 47–65°F, and Lofoten can be wet, muddy, windy, and cold even in summer.

+

A light wind shell is not enough as your only rain layer. Bring gear you trust for standing, hiking, and photographing in wet conditions.

Camera gear

  • — At least one camera body; a backup body is strongly recommended
  • — Suggested focal ranges: 14–24mm, 24–120mm, and 100–500mm or similar
  • — Sturdy tripod and remote shutter release
  • — Extra batteries, charger, and ample memory cards
  • — Dedicated rain sleeve for each camera setup
  • — Camera backpack with a dependable rain cover
  • — Several lens cloths and lens hoods
  • — Laptop and drives for backup and editing

Personal gear

  • — Waterproof hiking boots and lighter hiking shoes
  • — Gaiters for wet and muddy trails
  • — Dependable waterproof rain jacket and rain pants
  • — Thermal base layers, warm mid-layer, and insulated jacket
  • — Lightweight gloves, warmer gloves, and wool socks
  • — Beanie, neck buff, and ball cap
  • — Reusable water bottle and trail snacks
  • — Norway-compatible travel adapters and charging cables
  • — Passport, personal medication, and copies of essential travel documents

Weather-led itinerary

A Flexible 6-Day Field Plan

The schedule will change daily. Wind, rain, tides, trail conditions, and cloud cover will decide where we go. Some days we may move several times. Other days we may stay in one area, stop for coffee or lunch, and return when conditions improve. Everyone needs to stay flexible and easygoing.

Most field sessions will happen during the best light, often between 10:30pm and 3:30am. Daytime is for sleep, meals, groceries, travel, charging batteries, backing up files, image review, and preparing for the next outing.

Photography is the main focus. We will also visit towns, shops, fishing villages, bakeries, cafes, harbors, and scenic areas when the schedule allows.

01 · July 25 · Arrival and orientation

Group pickup is at the agreed Leknes hotel in the morning. We will drive about 1.5 hours to the Airbnb, settle into private rooms, make a grocery stop, organize gear, and review safety, weather, transportation, and the field plan. If everyone is rested enough, we will do a short, mostly flat walk near a lake, shoreline, or village and make a first evening photo session close to the house.

02 · July 26 · Reine and the fishing villages

We will photograph around Reine, Hamnøy, and Sakrisøy. Main subjects include cabins, bridges, harbors, reflective channels, and steep mountain walls. We will scout several angles before the best light and include a short village or shoreline walk. Instruction will cover wide-angle and telephoto approaches, foregrounds, compression, and avoiding the obvious postcard view.

03 · July 27 · Beaches, tides, and moving water

We will choose Skagsanden, Haukland, Uttakleiv, or another coastal area based on tide, wind, surf, and cloud direction. We will walk the beach or nearby lake area before the best light and look for sand channels, tidal pools, boulders, seaweed, reflections, and mountain relationships. Instruction will cover previsualization, shutter speed, wave timing, tripod placement, intimate scenes, filters, and keeping the composition controlled as water changes the scene.

04 · July 28 · Waterfalls, lakes, and mountain trails

If visibility and trail conditions are good, we will use a scouted hiking route to waterfalls, streams, mountain lakes, and elevated views. We will stop for strong light, water movement, plants, rock, fog, or changing atmosphere. The route will be chosen for the group and conditions. The longest planned hike is about 3.5 miles round trip with roughly 500 feet of gain.

05 · July 29 · Å, Moskenes, and the western islands

We will work farther west on Moskenesøya, with possible stops around Å, Sørvågen, Moskenes, ferry areas, and smaller settlements. We will visit Å, one of Norway’s oldest fishing villages, for harbor details, weathered buildings, pastries, and coffee. The day may include village photography, sheltered harbors, mountain lakes, roadside fjords, and a short hike or walk near the water or trailheads. If the light is best in one place, we will stay there.

06 · July 30 · Nusfjord, weather window, and image review

This day stays open for the best remaining weather opportunity and a possible visit to Nusfjord, another of Norway’s oldest fishing villages. Clear mountains may mean an elevated trail. Low cloud or rain may mean protected fjords, waterfalls, villages, harbor details, or intimate coastal work. We will also set aside time to back up files, review images, and work through post-processing.

07 · July 31 · Departure and Leknes return

After checkout, we will load the vehicles and return to Leknes as a group. If timing allows, we will add one short, easy walk near a lake, harbor, or shoreline before drop-off. The final drop-off time and location will be based on the group’s confirmed travel plans. Do not book an early flight that conflicts with the group transfer.

Flight planning

Getting To Leknes, Norway

Everyone attending the workshop should plan to fly into Leknes Airport (LKN).

For most international travelers, getting to Leknes is easiest to think of as two bookings: your long international flight into Norway, then a shorter Widerøe flight into Leknes. Flights and seats are limited, so book the Leknes portion early.Search Widerøe Flights

Physical requirements and field schedule

+

Plan for approximately five hikes. The longest is expected to be about 3.5 miles round trip with roughly 500 feet of elevation gain. Most locations require less walking, but this is not a road-only workshop.

You must be comfortable carrying camera equipment over wet rocks, sand, mud, uneven trails, and moderately steep terrain. Routes may change because of rain, wind, trail conditions, safety, or group ability.

The strongest field hours will often run from roughly 10:30pm to 3:30am. Daytime is used for sleep, meals, travel, charging, file backups, editing, and image review.

Travel insurance and preparation

+

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for this international workshop. Consider coverage for trip cancellation, delays, medical care, emergency evacuation, baggage, and photography equipment.

Bring dependable rain protection for yourself and your complete camera system. Several consecutive rainy days are possible, and field sessions will continue when conditions remain safe.

Exact meeting instructions, the pickup hotel, final packing guidance, and group travel coordination will be sent to registered participants before departure.

Deposit and balance schedule

+

A $1,500 deposit reserves your place and applies toward the $5,895 workshop price. If you cancel and your spot is re-filled by another participant, the deposit is refundable minus the $600 cancellation and administrative fee described below.

The remaining balance of $4,395 is due February 25, 2027. Reservations made after that date require payment in full.

Frequently asked questions

+

What experience level is required? Beginner, intermediate, and advanced photographers are welcome. Instruction is adjusted to each participant’s equipment, experience, and goals.

Do I need to be comfortable hiking? Yes. You must be comfortable hiking with camera gear on wet rocks, sand, mud, uneven trails, and moderately steep terrain. Most hikes or walks are expected to be short, but two days may be around 3 miles round trip.

Is the itinerary fixed? No. Weather, tides, visibility, trail conditions, and light determine the daily route. The locations listed on this page are planned working areas, not guaranteed stops on specific days.

What if it rains? Rain is expected. We photograph safely through mist, low clouds, wet foregrounds, and passing weather, then move quickly when an opening of light develops.

Will I have a private room? Yes. Each paying participant has a private bedroom in the shared workshop house.

Cancellation policy

+

Because this is an international workshop, significant non-refundable expenses are paid well in advance for lodging, transportation, reservations, and other workshop logistics.

A $1,500 deposit is required to reserve your place. If you cancel and your spot is re-filled by another participant, the deposit is refundable minus the $600 cancellation and administrative fee.

The remaining workshop balance is due February 25, 2027, 150 days before the workshop begins. The $1,500 deposit option is available through February 25. Reservations made after this date require payment in full at the time of booking.

151+ days before the workshop:
Any payments made beyond the $1,500 deposit will be refunded.

91–150 days before the workshop:
50% of the total workshop cost is non-refundable.

90 days or fewer before the workshop:
No refunds will be issued unless your spot is re-filled by another participant.

If I am able to fill your place with another participant, regardless of when you cancel, payments received will be refunded minus a $600 cancellation and administrative fee. A refund will only be issued once the replacement participant has completed their registration and payment.

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Personal emergencies, illness, flight disruptions, weather, or other circumstances that prevent attendance do not override this cancellation policy.

The workshop will not be cancelled because preferred light or specific photographic conditions do not occur. Locations and timing may change because of weather, transportation, access, safety, or the strongest available opportunities.

If Hunter Page Photography cancels the workshop, payments made directly to Hunter Page Photography will be refunded. Airfare, hotels, insurance, equipment rental, and other personal travel expenses are not covered.
