Rounded badlands striped with red and gray layers stretch toward distant snow-covered mountains, with scattered snow tracing eroded slopes beneath a broad sky of pink and purple clouds.

Burning Bentonite

Bentonite Hills, Utah. 2025

Sunset at the Bentonite Hills is the best time of day to really see the colors and formations of this other-worldly landscape based just outside of Hanksville and Torrey, Utah. This image was taken just minutes before sunset, with nice, soft-angled sunlight on the colorful Bentonite Hills. In this image, you can see Factory Butte in the far distance along with the Caineville Mesa near Hanksville, Utah. The reds, purples, yellows, and orange colors that the Bentonite Hills are known for are shown very well in this photograph. I composed this image with precision timing to get just the right amount of intensity of sunlight but that shows the true beauty of the Bentonite Hills.
