Overlapping sand dunes form sweeping curves and sharp crests, with pale illuminated edges contrasting against deep blue shadows and fine ripples texturing the steep foreground slope.
Death Valley

Called Upon

Death Valley National Park, California. 2023

As the light faded, Andrew and Sam decided to head back to camp before it got dark. Seth Hamel and I stayed in order to photograph the Eureka Dunes in twilight / blue hour. It was undeniable that this was the right move. Everything turned shades of blue, purple, magenta, neutrals of white and gray. It was surreal to watch such a yellow-colored landscapes turn the opposite hue. And it looked good! Each formation was softer, the lines more precise and the undulating of each mound of sand vary in luminance ever so slightly. Once it was totally dark, Seth and I returned to our motorcycles, put our boots on and rode back to camp in the dark, through deep sand and shown the way by the headlight from the motorcycle.
