Southwest DesertCanyons Never-End
Wilderness - Canyon Country, Utah. 2022
After two intense days of hiking with fully loaded backpacks, crossing ice-covered streams, hopping over boulders, and navigating challenging routes, we finally gained elevation above the canyon floor.
Ahead, a steep scree field led us toward towering vertical cliffs—our unconventional “route” into a remote canyon. This stretch demanded careful route finding, the use of ropes to hoist packs, and squeezing through narrow passages. It was a true test of endurance and teamwork. With just hours to spare before sunset, we made camp in a place few have ever seen. The following evening, I ventured out to this secluded viewpoint, a rare vantage point carved by effort and determination.
This moment, captured on day three of a five-day backpacking expedition, embodies the raw wilderness and unfiltered beauty of Utah’s backcountry—a landscape that rewards those willing to push beyond the beaten path.
