Rounded desert hills striped in red, cream, and gray fill the shadowed foreground, with sparse shrubs across the rocky middle ground and sunlit orange cliffs beneath a pale blue sky.

Cinna-buns

Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. 2024

Alien textures, vibrant color bands, and sandstone domes that resemble giant cinnamon rolls — this remote location near Capitol Reef National Park is otherworldly. The swirling forms of bentonite clay collide with the iconic domes of Capitol Reef in a visual symphony that feels almost too surreal to be real. It’s places like this that remind me how endlessly diverse Utah’s desert can be. I visit hundreds of stunning spots throughout the year, but this location is reserved exclusively for participants of my Capitol Reef & Utah Badlands Photography Workshop. These workshops are more than a photography experience — they’re a deep dive into the hidden corners of canyon country, far beyond the reach of typical park visitors or daily tour routes. Sharing my home and guiding passionate photographers through these seldom-seen badlands is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work. Photographed during the Capitol Reef & Utah Badlands Workshop.
