Desert Castle

Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. 2023

The morning began under a thick, dark sky with a heavy atmosphere that seemed to shut out any chance for light. The horizon was layered with rainclouds, and rain was already moving in behind the striking Bentonite formations. Despite the moodiness in the sky, I set up my composition, aware that capturing anything remarkable was a long shot. As I fine-tuned my focus stacking and prepared for what I expected to be a flat, low-contrast scene, a sudden break appeared in the clouds. The sun’s first rays pushed through, casting a deep red and orange glow that angled across the formation, illuminating it in a fiery contrast against the darker clouds. It was a fleeting, perfect light—rare and powerful—that emphasized the Bentonite’s textured surfaces and brought out hues I’d never seen here before. The scene was transformed in those few moments, and what began as a gloomy morning became an unforgettable experience, proving that the desert always has a surprise in store.
