Scattered desert shrubs cast long shadows across pale, rippled sand, with low dunes and hazy bands of windblown sand stretching toward dark, rocky mountains in the background.
Death Valley

Desert in Motion

Death Valley National Park, California. 2023

We finally made it to the Ibex Dunes in Death Valley National Park, but when we did, the wind did too. In fact, the wind had been present the vast majority of the day before, reaching upwards of 70MPH. We took cover in an old mining cabin and stayed the night. It was one of the coolest experiences ever: Taking shelter in a 90 year old cabin, maintained by those willing to dedicate time to it. We hiked out to the Ibex Dunes as the wind ramped up to about 40mph winds. The sand was blowing quickly across the ground making walking seem like a simulation. Each step felt like walking backwards as the sand moved the earth below you, in the direction in which you walked. I wanted to capture this type of image, and through many attempts I decided to do some in camera motion or ICM. Slowing the shutter down and moving the camera ever-so slightly to enhance this feeling of motion. I offer wall art prints to showcase the beauty of Death Valley in your homes and walls so you can have a piece of Death Valley with you at all times.
