Closely spaced tree trunks fill the frame, their smooth gray and tan bark marked by dark, eye-shaped knots, thin horizontal scars, and vertical streaks in subdued light.
Intimate Scenes

Internal Light

Fishlake National Forest, Utah. 2025

The internal light. A moment of clarity, a moment of internal silence. It came out of no-where. I was just hiking along, slowly, along a lake. I came upon a hill and there were just these four aspens you see. I walked next to them, looked right at them and they were glowing, internally. The light came in, lit up one aspen and that aspen casted that glow onto the surrounded aspens. This light happens all the time. But being able to actually photograph that light is a whole other thing. More often than not, the space between trees is too large and you end up with a lot of dead space, distractions, etc. But this little moment was amazing. Great light in such a small scene. And these aspens were really quite young and small. It looked like nothing but it came out to be something.
