Intimate Scenes

Numbing

Zion National Park, Utah. 2019

After miles of hiking upstream in The Narrows, and taking a turn into a narrower canyon, this perfectly sculpted scene lent itself to me. I told the others to go ahead and I stood here, in the flowing, freezing winter water to photograph this scene. The zig zag of the water working its way through the sandstone, the leaves pasted to the walls above the stream. Everything about it was all-consuming. It was winter, December sometime, just further up was ice hanging off the canyon walls but this scene held itself together for months.
