Autumn ColorsOne’s Experience
Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Utah. 2024
Setting foot into this canyon for the first time was an experience I won’t forget. Every turn revealed something new—intricate layers of rock, hidden alcoves, and the unmistakable signs of those who walked these lands long before us. This is what I love most about Utah’s deep, winding canyons: the feeling of stepping into a place where time moves differently, where history and nature blend seamlessly.
Elena and I began our trek in the late fall, with crisp air and golden light filtering through the towering walls. The hike in wasn’t long, but it was nothing short of stunning. We had the entire canyon to ourselves—no footprints, no distant voices, just the raw silence of the desert. That solitude made each moment feel even more special, as if we were witnessing something that had remained unseen for centuries.
This particular scene stopped me in my tracks. The light, the atmosphere, the way everything aligned—it was one of those fleeting moments that happen constantly in nature but are rarely witnessed, let alone captured. I spent time working with this composition, fully immersed in the experience of seeing this canyon for the first time.
As the day waned, we pressed on, racing the fading light and dropping temperatures to reach the truck, where warm clothes and a hot meal awaited. But before that, we had this—our first evening in a canyon that already felt timeless.
