Branching trees with spiky green crowns rise from dry grass and scattered rocks above a broad desert valley, with layered mountain ridges catching warm pink light beyond the shadowed foreground.

Over-Watchers

Lee Flat, Death Valley National Park, California. 2025

On our last morning, after two mornings that came before it, I decided to ride the bike up a nearby hill and walk into this zone. I wanted some elevation gain in order to see the valley below and to watch the day unfold. And so I did. I framed up a handful of compositions, some were alright though none really brought to life the moment and beauty of this landscape. This was my best attempt at doing so. The first light came in and filled the valley below with warm light. As it did that, the mountains above began to glow. The ridgeline I was on was the last to receive light, though it wasn't far behind the valley. I photographed the Lee Flat area of Death Valley and tried to encapsulate my idea of this place.
