Lucks Chance

When I arose, there was about a foot of snow at my home. I began the drive at 5 a.m. not a snowplow has been out yet. The roads were deep in snow and slick. The road from Torrey to the Factory Butte region is windy, with 10ft drop offs on the side of the road, down to the Fremont River. Roughly 1.5 hours in, I turned onto the dirt, which was snow, which seemed just as deep as Torrey. A very surprising thing to see, because it is about 2,000 feet lower than Torrey. I arrived here at Moonscape Overlook shortly after. Not a soul around. I set up and waited. I sat in a thick cloud. Not a hint of light and then, out of nowhere things began to change: As a wall of snow and fog engulfed me, with winds of maybe 5mph, the sun slowly came out, in-between opening of low fog and snow, burning through the fog and making landfall on the pristine snow-filled landscape of Moonscape Overlook and the Mancoshale Formation. Just as the wind blew the dense snow and fog away, just as I could see the landscape clearly is when I made this image. The moving storm can be slightly seen on the far left side of this image. As this was happening, I was in shock. It was definitely one of the best and most beautiful moments I have witnessed.. The day started out dark, gloomy, no hint of sun appearing in any way. Persistence moved me forward and forward until the moment of revealing came to fruition. Persistence pays off almost every single time. Afterward I drove to Factory Butte, I got out and hiked around some rolling hills at the base of Factory Butte in order to photograph the varying light and shadow dance across the snow-covered landscape. A low cloud still hung to the east and south face of Factory Butte, making it seem like a ship on the ocean and were just seeing the top of the butte. What a morning!
