Last year’s participant review
“Hunter leads great photography workshops. He knows places I would not have found otherwise, provides excellent composition suggestions, and is attentive to everyone in the group.”
A brief desert transformation
Spring brings fast-moving weather, clean atmosphere, vibrant color, and the possibility of a Southern Utah super bloom. This small-group workshop pairs those fleeting conditions with local knowledge and focused, personal instruction.

Overview
The desert super bloom is one of Southern Utah’s most spectacular and unpredictable natural events. When snowpack, rainfall, and weather align, wildflowers spread across cracked clay, remote flats, badlands, cliffs, and mesas.
I have spent thousands of hours exploring the country east of Capitol Reef, including Hanksville, Factory Butte, hidden desert basins, unmarked roads, and locations that do not appear in guidebooks or social media.
That familiarity helps us respond to the strongest available color, light, weather, and landscape—whether the season produces abundant flowers or leads us toward the area’s equally compelling sandstone, canyons, and badlands.

Instruction in the field
We photograph during the best light, then work through images together to refine composition, intent, and editing decisions.
Instruction covers color management, isolating subjects in busy environments, working with wind, exposure in high-contrast scenes, focus stacking, and building compositions around both intimate details and grand vistas.
Workshop at a glance

The creative practice
Spring light
Work with fast-moving clouds, filtered sunlight, clean atmosphere, and the pastel glow that follows a passing storm.
Composition
Build depth with wildflowers, simplify busy scenes, isolate subjects, and connect intimate details to the wider landscape.
Field craft
Manage wind, high-contrast light, focus stacking, exposure, and a deliberate workflow from first frame to final image.
Personal vision
Move slowly, explore scenes deeply, and receive individual guidance that strengthens your own creative approach.
A learning experience
My focus is helping you compose and articulate the scene in front of us. I provide in-field composition critiques throughout each day instead of making my own photographs.
Camera settings, post-processing, visual flow, image design, and storytelling are connected back to your own files so you leave with a repeatable way to see and work.

Spring as collaborator
Wildflowers are fleeting and conditions cannot be guaranteed. The itinerary remains flexible so we can follow peak color, fresh growth, dramatic clouds, filtered sunlight, and the locations offering the strongest photographic possibilities each day.

A flexible daily itinerary
Wildflower conditions, weather, and light guide the precise schedule. This outline provides the workshop’s general rhythm.
01 · Day 1
Meet around 4:00pm at the Skyview Hotel in Torrey, Utah. After check-in and introductions, we head into Capitol Reef National Park for our first sunset field session.
02 · Day 2
Begin at sunrise beneath immense cliffs as first light transforms the landscape, followed by midday canyon photography. After a break, return to the field for dramatic grand vistas at sunset.
03 · Day 3
Photograph a quiet sunrise location discovered through years of living in the region: discreet Bentonite Hills among sandstone formations. After a midday break, we return for sunset at another carefully selected location.
04 · Day 4
A final sunrise field session is followed by a focused group post-processing session before the workshop concludes around 11:00am.
