Cold Front

Backpacking in the deep backcountry of Glacier National Park, Montana. This is Elizabeth Lake in Glacier Park. This was on a four-day backpacking trip during the autumn season as we hiked into the Continental Divide. As you can see, the weather moved in through the night. The wind picked and the temperatures dropped well below freezing. The mountain peaks, above Elizabeth Lake, shoot into the low clouds during a golden sunrise of colorful and cool clouds. This was our last day backpacking in Glacier National Park. The winds that moved swiftly across the surface of Elizabeth Lake had us packing up our gear quickly to begin our 10 mile hike back to our vehicle at the Belly River trailhead. Day one of this backpacking trip we hiked to Cosely Lake; 9 miles, second day to the Head Elizabeth Lake Campground; 6.1 miles. The hike was 6.1 miles of bliss! Though the bridges across the rivers and streams had been taken down for the season so we had to take off our boots and hikes through the running water. At the Elizabeth Lake head, we had amazing low fog and crazy weather. Rain soon came in and we went into the woods, where the campsite was and stayed for a while to make dinner and sleep. The next morning, our third day, we hike down to the foot of Elizabeth Lake campsite; 1.6 miles and camped there for the third night. The wind was howling but it was great. On the Fourth morning, snow had fallen on the peaks, and the sunrise was pink and purple, with huge mountains standing all around. It was bitter cold with high winds and just after breakfast, we left camp to hike the 9.5 miles back to the parking lot where our vehicle was. In this image, on the fourth morning, you can see golden light of sunrise while deep blues and moody skies high above, while Elizabeth Lakes wave were crashing in the high winds. The Mountains you can see here are: Seward Mountain Elevation: 8,894 ft.
