Winter ScenesRime Rice
Heavy fog encapsulated the lower half of this mountain for days on end. During a short hike I had realized the ice covered forest. The ice you see is a hoar frost, which is when thick fog and inversion consume an area, with cold temperatures, they moisture sticks and freezes to whatever is there. In this case, the forests. The moody shades of white and gray consume this otherwise colorful forest scene. The branches thick with ice, as the bark shows some patterns of ice.
The frost is wild and when in these moments, you can feel the cold surrounding you, and it is hard to get warm because of how thick that moisture actually is. It is like standing on the coast, in a winter fog, it is very hard to get warm. This is an often occurrence in this section of northern Montana. From my experience, the town of Whitefish, all the way up to the ski resort was in a dense inversion for weeks at a time. Rarely allowing the sun to shine through.
