Autumn Colors

Illuminate The Dying

There is something strangely somber about a tree that never finished letting go. As autumn comes to an end, a deciduous tree begins reclaiming what it can from its leaves, drawing valuable nutrients back into its branches, trunk, and roots before forming the separation layer that allows each leaf to fall. But when a sudden cold snap arrives too quickly, that process can be interrupted. The leaves die where they hang, turning brown before the tree has completely finished its transition into winter. This old cottonwood in Capitol Reef seemed caught in that moment—holding tightly to a season that had already passed. Its brown leaves remained long after the surrounding fall color had disappeared, illuminated for only a moment by beautiful golden light. There was warmth in the light, but very little warmth in the scene itself. To me, the photograph feels less like autumn and more like the quiet aftermath of it—a tree suspended somewhere between holding on and letting go.
