Western Forests

Over The Hills and Far Away

I could hardly believe how dense the forests were when I traveled to this area known as Swan Valley. The forests literally went on forever. Or until they reached the tall mountain peaks where no life thrived besides the yearly moth migration that happens on the Crown of the Continent. I camped out here for a couple of nights, attempting to photograph and make sense of this beautiful landscape. Even after many visits, I only came away with a few keepers out of the plethora of attempts. I find forests to be extremely difficult to photograph and make order out of the chaos. Something that tends to help with that is when you have dappled light that moves through the landscape. When this occurs, I try to frame up a section of the scene that has separation already, and then I allow the shadow and sun to work their magic in that specific area. Which is exactly what I have done here.
