Pale orange cliffs and slender rock spires rise above a forested valley, with a sheer rock face filling the right foreground and a low sun casting golden light across hazy distant ridges.

Worth-While Risk

Dixie National Forest, Utah. 2025

Risking it has its positives, depending on the risk you are willing put into it. Risking your life for an image is taking this too far. On this evening I walked that fine line. I slowly lowered myself onto a small peninsula, all sides exposed, I knelt on the edge of a crumbled cliff face, with no way of finding safety if something were to occur. I sat there, stomach turning each time I looked down, and photographed exposures as the sun came back out of the clouds on the horizon. The cliff was likely 500ft down, after impact, and a long roll off another 1,000ft cliff. It was not my finest moment. But damn did it pay off in the end. As I backed off of the narrow edge I was on and looked back while on stable ground, I realized just how dumb that was. I knew it was sketchy while doing it but from this other angle I really saw just how ridiculous that move was. Thankfully I made it out.. and with a damn nice image.
